Reporting to the Mechanical Manager, the Onboard Mechanical Technician is an integral team member of the Rocky Mountaineer Operations and Mechanical team. The Onboard Mechanical Technician will mainly be responsible for the safe and correct operation of equipment and functionality of various systems on all rail cars and locomotives. This position requires a frequent amount of travel on-board the train during the operating season. This position is guest facing and professional interactions will be a key part of this role.

Key Areas of Accountability
--- Lead reliability and performance of equipment while on-board
--- Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair rail car and locomotive components, interior and exterior
--- Operate handbrakes, couple air hoses, disconnect/connect HEP cables and water lines, operate track switches/derails
--- May converse with guests onboard the train to ensure our welcoming environment is a seamless experience
--- Provide timely, accurate reporting to team members and partners
--- Support train movements of passenger rail equipment
--- Provide leadership to workplace safety by role modeling appropriate behavior and enforcing safety rules
--- Provide on the job coaching and guidance to other team members and contractors
--- Troubleshoot diverse equipment types and support cross functional trade defect repairs
--- Willingness to participate in personal development company initiatives
Safety
--- Comply with all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), host railway rules/requirements and all other safety policies, procedures, and safety rules
--- Identify, protect, and report safety hazards to management and OH&S Committee
--- Meet or exceed safety and security requirements
--- Maintain basic first aid level provided by Rocky Mountaineer
--- Maintain a clean and safe work area
Operations
--- Support the successful execution of the Operating Plan
--- Support safe movement of rail equipment
--- Execute the company's materials handling strategy
--- Support operational and equipment availability requirements
--- Support 5S Lean methodology to seek continuous improvement efficiencies
--- This position may require the ability to train for and perform switching duties
Mechanical
--- Read, understand, and interpret schematics, manuals and other instructions pertaining to equipment
--- High mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate equipment and hand tools
--- Train for the use of equipment and hand tools
--- Execute a successful Maintenance Program
--- Ensure completion of work orders maintaining brand standards, working collaboratively with team members and contractors
--- Execute mechanical and reliability requirements
--- Respond to service failures as required
--- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications
This position is deemed Safety Sensitive and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety sensitive medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by regulation. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.
Education, Certification, Licenses
--- High School Diploma
--- Valid Driver's License and clean driving record
--- Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operation such as forklifts, cranes, etc.
--- Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe small hand tool handling such as grinders, drills, etc.
--- Journeyman or Master Trade Qualification, an asset
--- Previous Qualification under Railway Operating Rules, an asset
--- First Aid Certification, an asset
Experience/Skills
--- Understanding of mechanical systems such as electrical systems, HVAC systems, communication systems, and pneumatic systems
--- Previous railroad experience is an asset
--- Previous experience in maintaining locomotives and railcars, an asset
--- Previous experience with carpentry, plumbing, and appliance troubleshooting, as asset
--- Familiarity with 480VAC 3 phase electrical systems, an asset
--- Strong coordination and organizational skills
--- High attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
--- Able to take personal accountability, be adaptable, and be a problem solver
--- Familiarity with computer applications
--- Good communication and leadership skills
--- Able to work cross-functionally
--- High mechanical aptitude
Work Environment
--- Frequent travel is required (3-day/2-night round trip per week - Denver, CO to Moab, UT)
--- Hours worked per day range from 10 hours - 16 hours
--- Physical demands may require lifting to 80 lbs. on occasion
--- Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day
--- 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules
--- Indoor/outdoor working environment
Salary

  • $36.05 an hour
  • Eligible for Rocky Mountaineer's Short Term Incentive Plan (STIP) at a target of 7.5% Eligible Benefits
