Job Summary To support strategic analysis in determining learning and experience rates across manufacturing, fossil energy (including fuels), renewable energy (including bioenergy and biofuels), food processing, petrochemicals, and related industries. NREL is seeking a motivated graduate level intern, who is interested in determining robust answers to questions such as: How do industries (especially process industries), learn, develop, and mature? How does new technology and innovation impact the establishment of existing and new industries? How do products reach commercialization? How and why do production costs decline? What impacts do piloting and demoing have on reaching commercially viable processes? What lessons do existing industries provide? What are the impacts of timing and scale-up of production processes? What are the differences in learning across emerging, mature, or declining technologies? This position will support research into industrial learning of industries analogous to advanced biofuels. The candidate will be expected to individually research and collect relevant industry case study material and apply robust approaches in gathering and analyzing data. The person will work closely with other NREL analysts and the work does offer publication opportunities. Primary responsibilities of the candidate include data gathering and processing to support a broad industry analysis portfolio. The candidate is expected to work closely with the NREL team in integrating and jointly analyzing the data collected. Additional general responsibilities include: Conduct objective research that generates independent, high quality, and reproducible results. Assist senior researchers in the design, implementation, and reporting of the research project. Support the creation of technical reports, journal articles and presentations. It is expected that the delivered work will be of superior quality and will sometimes need to be delivered under aggressive timelines. Work with senior staff to conceive, design and define new analytical tasks and project ideas. Communicate effectively and succinctly both in writing and in speaking. .
Required Education, Experience, and SkillsMust be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor or Masters degree in Business, Industrial Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Engineering & Public Policy, Sustainability Science and Engineering, Process Systems Engineering, Economics, Finance, Operations Research, Statistics or related subjects. Interest in market/industry analysis. Experience and/or interest in potentially relevant industries such as industrial process manufacturing, energy, food processing, or biomass handling or processing. Output-driven mentality, motivated and independent. .
