Your role at GEI.
GEI Consultants is seeking a Fluvial Geomorphologist or River
Hydraulics Engineer in our Colorado offices (Denver or Fort
Collins) to conduct project work, help manage projects, and help
grow our river and wetland restoration practice in the Central
Region. This position requires experience in stream surveys,
open-channel hydraulics, restoration design and construction
monitoring. Projects will involve fieldwork (stream surveys,
including topography, bed and bank characterization, flow
measurements, etc), technical work (hydraulic modeling and
analysis, drafting, design, specs and bids) project management (if
desired), and marketing/business development support (proposals,
conferences, presentations, white papers).
The incumbent will be responsible for leading and supporting
technical-based stream restoration projects; interfacing and
maintaining strong relationships with GEI staff, clients, and
teaming partners; and providing input to environmental and
engineering project and proposal teams. We are seeking a stream
professional with proven experience on small-, medium-, and
large-scale projects to help seek, obtain, develop, and execute
projects in stream, floodplain, and wetland restoration . The
candidate will lead and assist with technical and sometimes complex
projects focused primarily throughout the Rocky Mountain region,
but often in other regions as well.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
Specific responsibilities and duties are not limited to but may
include:
+ Data collection, management, analysis, and evaluation.
+ Interpretation and synthesis of topographic, hydrologic,
vegetation, spatial, and environmental data.
+ Development and interpretation of empirical and numerical
models.
+ Preparing technical reports and scientific manuscripts in
conjunction with other staff.
+ Assist with preparation of technical reports.
+ Build client relationships with current and potential
clients.
+ Perform internal trainings, as relevant, for development of
channel and wetland restoration practice.
+ On occasion, may be required to spend 1-4 nights per week or more
out of town working at remote locations.
The successful applicant will provide supporting roles in
restoration work and projects. Projects will involve complex and
technical analyses and investigations; innovative mitigation and
conservation planning; multi-disciplinary teamwork with biologists,
planners, restoration ecologists, landscape architects, engineers,
and attorneys; and creative integration of natural resource
analysis and project design. Exciting opportunities exist on
projects involving aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement;
fisheries and aquatic ecology; watershed assessment and management;
aquatic bio assessment; large NEPA compliance documents for major
water resources programs; flood control and levee setbacks;
comprehensive natural resource planning for local, state, and
federal agencies; water rights applications and other
regulatory/permit proceedings; planning studies related to natural
resources management, water supply, and flood management. Formal
and informal staff collaboration and problem solving of complex
restoration issues in a collegial environment are important
components of this position.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Candidates must have expertise and training in relevant
disciplines (hydrology, hydraulics, sediment transport principles,
stream assessments and restoration, watershed processes, floodplain
and environmental permitting support).
+ Candidates should be detail-oriented, excellent communicators
(both verbal and written), and have the capability to understand
and communicate complex technical, issues related to fluvial
processes.
+ 5+ years of prior relevant consulting experience with experience
in the Western U.S.
+ The candidate will have experience with 1D and 2D modeling.
+ The candidate will have experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D
software, with ability to analyze/convert surfaces to support H/H
modeling program demands.
+ Bachelors degree in civil engineering, Hydrology, Watershed
Science, or equivalent subject area;
+ Experience with technical report preparation
+ Positive, flexible, team-oriented approach, with the willingness
and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team and
mentor Jr.-level staff to foster professional development.
Desired Qualifications
+ Masters Degree in Fluvial Geomorphology or Hydraulic Engineering
is preferred.
+ Relevant professional licensure (PE, PG, PH, CFM, PLS, etc) or
the willingness to obtain one within two years.
+ Multidisciplinary background in watershed processes,(vegetation
dynamics, river and groundwater hydraulics, geomorphology, and
riparian ecology)
+ Effective time management and follow-through, with the ability to
simultaneously work on and lead multiple tasks/projects and meet
project deadlines.
+ Ability to work independently and with a diverse,
multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced work environment.
+ Experience with aquatic restoration/management projects and
working at the intersection of river processes and ecology.
