Job Description:

Sierra Nevada Corporation IAS is currently seeking a Materials and Processes (M&P) Engineer to provide design and manufacturing support and oversight for a variety of aircraft modification efforts. The person in this position should have background in selection and evaluation of materials for high reliability aerospace applications. This is a mid-career position meaning the successful applicant can demonstrate through prior job experience they are considered an emerging expert in the M&P field but may still some have some areas of technical expertise in which they are considered a learner.
The successful applicant will spend up to 60% of their time aiding programs in the selection and implementation of composite material systems. The remaining 40% will be spent in as-needed consultation on metallic corrosion prevention and 3D printing technology/material selection. Any unforeseen down time will be filled with revising SNC IAS’s material specifications and charting the course for future materials development/qualification.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • processes, resolve issues and provide technical information needed for material selection and process development.
  • Originate material and fabrication specifications, control documents, verification and validation plans, procedures, reports, or other documentation in support of design and development activities as related to M&P engineering.
  • Conduct material compatibility and flammability analysis review as well as revise the flammability process at SNC IAS
  • Work with external companies and laboratories to perform material testing and solve manufacturing issues
  • Ensure conformance of products with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Understand, plan and execute technical activities in accordance with SNC policies, procedures, work instructions and specific customer requirements
  • Perform vendor qualification for new composite vendors
  • Manage the Material Science lab (equipment maintenance/tracking and test planning/implementation assistance for programs)

Must-haves:

  • BS in Materials Engineering or related discipline and typically 6+ years of relevant experience. Advanced education and/or experience may be considered in-lieu of required experience or education, respectively
  • Excellent communication skills required. The candidate will be expected to communicate effectively in presentations to large audiences as well as person to person without prompting
  • Ability to perform work with minimal supervision under short deadlines.
  • Well versed with industry standards for materials, processes and mechanical parts selection and management including AR-3/19 and CMH-17
  • Knowledge of engineering materials (such as metals, polymers, composites, adhesives, etc.) as well as a basic understanding of engineering systems (fasteners, pressure vessels, etc.) and Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques
  • Minimum Fundamental Knowledge, Skills and Abilities as stated in SNC’s Responsibility Matrix

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. Security Clearance. U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance for employment. Estimated Starting Salary Range: $101,774.67 - $139,940.19
