Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV), within the MCCS Directorate, is looking for a motivated entry-level technician to help deploy and maintain PV systems in support of research to develop understanding of long-term performance of PV.

The work will include such tasks as:

  • Mechanical and electrical construction of research equipment for long term outdoor experiments.
  • Wiring of electrical control panels and module interconnections for PV systems, including monitoring hardware
  • Current-voltage measurements to quantify performance of PV modules
  • Understanding of electrical maintenance and calibration routines.
  • Outdoor PV system installation and maintenance including cleaning of sensors and modules
  • Ability to learn new processes and operate independently.
  • Support of PV research activities, as needed.
  • Willing to work in variable conditions indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to follow safety protocol and established laboratory procedures.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Research Technician I- High School plus 2 years related experience or AA Degree.

Relevant experience or certification of comparable scope may be substituted for education.

Research Technician II- High School plus 4 years related experience. AA degree plus 2 years.

Relevant experience or certification of comparable scope may be substituted for education.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with mechanical and electrical construction of research equipment.
  • Experience with electrical wiring and systems up to and including 480VAC three phase and 1000VDC systems.
  • Experience with calibration and test procedures.
  • Operational knowledge of electrical test equipment.
  • Competency with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to document work, including simple drawings and routinely updating maintenance logs.
  • Ability to work as part of team and to communicate effectively
  • Ability to take direction from multiple people and learn quickly.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule tasks to meet deliverables on time.

Research Technician II- High School plus 4 years related experience. AA degree plus 2 years.

Relevant experience or certification of comparable scope may be substituted for education.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $45,700 - $73,000

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
