Position Summary

This position is integral to the operation of food labs in the School of Hospitality as the student will work closely with the Food Lab Coordinator and chef instructors. The student will need to be able to fill food order requisitions, deliver requisitions to the appropriate classes, and be able to cook, or be willing to learn to cook various cuisines for specific classes.
The student can expect to work 10 - 30 hours per week, with hours varying between 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Multiple students will be hired to cover different tasks at different times. Ideal candidates will be able to work during semester breaks and the summer semester, as well as with monthly events the School of Hospitality puts on. #LI-DNI


  • Ability to identify foods, quantity of foods, and building and distribute food/supply requisitions for food based classes, as well as taking an inventory of leftover product, and storing left over product.

  • Managing a food waste log

  • Receiving orders

  • Conduct a weekly inventory

  • Storeroom and kitchen labs upkeep (rotate stock, clean and organize). This may require washing dishes/pots/pans from time to time; as well as mopping floors and sanitizing kitchen surfaces.

  • Check lab par levels and report to lab coordinator for orders and instructions

  • Take and record temperatures of all cooling and freezing equipment, and report any issues to Food Lab Coordinator.

  • Assist with departmental events; estimated to be 2-3 per week per semester

  • Assist chef instructors with class and or event related tasks

    Required Qualifications

    • Must have work-study funding through the Financial Aid office

    • Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in written form

    • Must possess excellent customer service skills and be able to convey a hospitality attitude

    • School of Hospitality kitchen uniform-We will supply one or more of the following: Cook's shirt, hat and apron

    • Must be punctual, professional and reliable

    • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.

    • Must be able to work with minimal supervision

    • ServSafe Food Handler Certification-WE WILL COVER THIS

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Familiarity with campus procedures, departments and locations

      • Previous food handling experience

      • Knowledge with cooking methods and techniques

        MSU Denver offers temporary, non-benefit eligible employees sick leave. The sick leave is accrued at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed a maximum of 48 hours in a calendar year.
