Under general supervision, a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a
paraprofessional support person who gives breastfeeding information
and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
Essential Functions:
- Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone,
home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals
determined by the local WIC program. (45%)
- May counsel women in the WIC clinic. (5%)
- Makes periodic contact with all clients in their assigned
caseload. (5%)
- Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new
mothers, including telling them about the benefits of
breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start
with breastfeeding. She also mothers prevent and handle common
breastfeeding concerns. (5%)
- Is available outside usual 8 to 5 working hours to new mothers
who are having breastfeeding problems. (5%)
- Respects each client by keeping information strictly
confidential. (5%)
- Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients.

- Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols to
the:
* WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator
* Lactation consultant
* The mother's physician or nurse
* Public health programs in the community
* Social service agencies
(5%)
- Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding
support groups (5%)
- Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding
conferences/workshops as appropriate (5%)
- Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are
provided by the supervisor (5%)
- May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling
through special projects and duties as assigned

information learned on the job, except when necessary in the

Education:
- High School Diploma or GED Required
Work Experience:
- Has breast fed at least one baby, willing to attend
breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor
Required
Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are preferred.
- Knowledge of and ability to use common office equipment, such
as copier, fax machine, and computer.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and
provide clear explanations and answers.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with
the public, other agencies, staff, and administration
