They have a wide service offering, and in particular they are the world leader in laboratory testing. They operate across several markets, with the biggest ones being, food testing, environmental testing, and pharmaceuticals. This particular role is for their environmental division, which tests mostly soil, air, water, asbestos, and construction materials. You don't need to be an expert in the science or type of testing that they are offering. What they are looking for is someone who is strong at driving operational excellence, operational efficiency, and who can maximise the productivity of the lab. Their operation is similar to a warehouse or production environment; samples come in, they are processed by instrumentation which an expert will analyse, the details of this are uploaded to an information management system, which then sends the results to customers. It's a high volume low margin business where the cost per sample is quite low, so generally people that have come from a high throughput background integrate well into their operation.
The groups presence is worldwide, with operations covering more than 50 countries - this role is focused on their site in Denver, CO. The company is well known and well respected internationally, they have solid and consistent management, and have grown more that 30% YoY for the last 5+ years. They are high performing, energetic, and driven as a culture, and are looking for someone who would fit into that kind of culture.
For this role, The Business Unit Manager will be expected to drive operational excellence and efficiency, look for strategic development areas for operational growth, and look to maximise areas for operational improvement and development. This role has a huge exposure within the US operations and is a key role which has a pathway for significant progression within the business. Candidates with a background in successfully managing and developing teams would be very interesting, as would candidates who can demonstrate prior experience doubling the size of a business with over 100 people within it.

  • Improve operations efficiency at site level. Streamline the operational processes, implement lean methodologies, refine procurement, and make good use of IT/technology (automation, machine-to-machine learning, AI, etc) so as to achieve maximum profitability.
  • The role is also designed to further standardise, streamline and optimise operations, to develop its ability to serve large key accounts, and leverage economies of scale. This role will lead programmes and teams for; Operational Best Practices (OBP), Test Portfolio Managements, Equipment & Consumables Standardization, Automation, Sustainability, Methods excellence, Operations excellence, Operational industrialisation.
  • Take appropriate measures to improve economic profit, including hands-on personal commitment in addressing situations where profit levels are low.
  • Prepare and propose annual budget and 3 years plan. Report on any deviations to deliver agreed upon results to internal stakeholders.
  • Develop service range and activities in the UK through organic growth and acquisitions with the objective to double in size within 4 years (20% annual growth: 10% organic growth, including outsourcing + 10% growth through acquisitions) while meeting agreed EBIT growth objectives.
  • Make sure that cross-selling synergies with other parts of the group in Europe are being developed.
  • Working in close collaboration with support functions (e.g. purchasing, business improvement, lean, IT etc) to drive disruptive, innovative and sustainable improvements are generated, in line with guidelines, tools and methodologies.
  • Expertise in running a business in the following areas would be beneficial; production, manufacturing, supply chain/logistics, laboratory testing, warehousing, fulfilment centre, contract manufacturing and private label, waste management, recycling, labs, packaging, pharmaceuticals, food production, and environmental services. Experience in these areas or allied fields would put you at a real advantage, as the candidate coming into this role would be expected to find and maximise efficiencies within procurement, by automation, process/system improvement, lean methodologies, and pricing improvements, amongst other things.
  • Candidates with experience in change management, transformation, turnaround, and business improvement experience would all be extremely advantageous.
  • Develop the people and subsequent management of the companies and Business Units under your responsibility. Define and agree goals and milestones with your management team and section heads, and ensure goals are defined and communicated to their respective teams. Set up customer centric Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor progress. Follow up as appropriate and become hands on if required to ensure achievement of goals.
  • Improve the technical aspects of the business units by ensuring the appropriate development and application of new techniques and business processes.
    Qualifications and experience required:
    • Minimum 3 years of successful experience in a management or leadership position, ideally looking after teams of 100+ people.
    • Minimum of 3 years of full P&L responsibility, ideally looking after a business of over $10m in revenue.
