Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Senior Laboratory Manager (SLM), manages the daily activities of the Laboratory Research Scientists in the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) and supports the research and development activities of the organization as related to analytical methods and analysis. Assists in the ongoing design, development, and execution of research to support pilots, demonstrations, and process optimization. Typical Duties: Works closely with the Technology and Innovation Department (TID) to perform applied research and development in areas related to water quality, alternative treatment studies, and technical evaluations, providing scientific expertise to support Metro objectives. Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates laboratory work for research scientists to support TID and serves as research scientist supervisor. Evaluates performance and provides training, counseling, and discipline where necessary. Participates in the employee selection process as necessary. Assists with the planning and execution of special sampling, testing, and other studies. Creates sampling and analysis schedules for special studies and communicates progress to TID and the SLM. Advises and develops novel analytical methods used for TID projects, including interpretation of analytical data. Generates reports and recommendations summarizing the validity and success. Provides technical direction to research scientists and assists with method development to ensure that analytical goals are achieved. Manages data review and validation of analytical data supporting research objectives. Manages data reporting to ensure that data is of high-quality and clearly communicated. Troubleshoots data inconsistencies. Coordinates with TID and other Metro departments to ensure data quality objectives are met for all analyses conducted by research scientists, and that projects are completed as necessary to meet Metro's strategic objectives. Works with laboratory QA/QC Specialist as appropriate to ensure LSD objectives are met. Evaluates analytical equipment needs and performs cost/benefit analyses for the research area of the lab, makes recommendations to the SLM or Department Head. Assists SLM with budgeting and planning for the research section of the lab. Coordinates and tracks service contracts for analytical research equipment. Fosters peer-level collaborations with universities, scientific companies, partner utilities, other scientific leaders to identify new practices and applications, remaining current in industry trends. Represents the department and organization in conference and organization participation. Coordinates and collaborates with the Regulatory Affairs Division to ensure proper handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous wastes. Develop and foster a high level of proficiency with business software such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and other data analytics. May represent the Laboratory Services Division on Metro project teams. Responsibilities under this item may include, participating in meetings, coordinating with the SLM and LSD staff regarding review and input on project activities and documents, communicating comments and concerns to the project team and tracking comments/concerns and providing updates to the SLM and LSD staff. Performs other administrative, technical, or supervisory duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related engineering or scientific discipline, and a minimum of four years of experience working in a laboratory or as a research scientist. Previous supervisory or project lead experience. Demonstrated experience conducting independent research, analyzing data, and reporting results. Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to independently solve complex problems. Strong knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and equipment used in a laboratory. Working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes. The ability to meet deadlines and to plan and coordinate work. A high level of proficiency with business software including software word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and email. Strong mathematical and data analysis skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with people of varying backgrounds, knowledge, and experience. Equivalency Equivalency equals two years of directly related professional experience for every year of education not completed. The stated experience requirement is in addition to any experience used to meet the education equivalency. Desired Qualifications TPC Course 382 Wastewater Treatment Processes course or Colorado Class D Wastewater License. Expert knowledge of various sampling and testing procedures used in the wastewater industry. General knowledge of microbiology, process control instrumentation, quality control procedures and systems. An advanced degree in environmental, chemical or civil engineering, chemistry, or related scientific or engineering discipline. Experience with Power BI or other data visualization tools.
