The Nutrition Center Manager serves as a staff member at will of the Denver Zoo. In that capacity, the Nutrition Center Manager plays a key role in ensuring optimal nutrition for the Denver Zoo's animals. The Nutrition Center Manager works with other Denver Zoo departments to maintain the health and psychological well-being of the Denver Zoo's animals by understanding the effect and impact of diet on these animals. This includes the formulation, preparation, and scientific assessment of diets and nutritional records; tracking diets and diet changes; and assisting with the diet review process. - Our staff is a dedicated and diverse group of individuals committed to providing quality care to our animals while creating moments of awe for guests.   • Accountable for the daily operations and staff of the Nutrition Center.
  • Manage the Nutrition Center staff by developing and mentoring staff; managing hourly staff schedules and payroll approvals; and providing on-the-job training.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of Nutrition Center equipment and facilities.
  • Manage computer-based procurement and diet records software.
  • Process and oversee vendor invoices, receipts, purchase authorizations, and contracts for new and existing products.
  • Coordinate with Denver Zoo leadership to establish food ordering policies, research supply sources, and procurement of diet substitutes.
  • Maintain adequate inventory to prevent food-supply interruptions; work with the Nutritionist to develop contingency plans for continuous feeding during unforeseen emergencies.
  • Develop and support procedures for receiving and fulfillment of orders from internal customers, including maintenance of catalog for internal ordering software.
  • Manage equipment purchases and repairs for the Nutrition Center. Priority 2 - Compliance
    • Monitor and maintain current industry best practices in physical safety, food safety, biosecurity, cleaning/sanitation standards, and regulatory compliance.
    • Manage the HAECP, USDA, and FDA programs to ensure compliance, biosecurity, and food safety.
    • Participate in periodic compliance and/or sustainability audits. - Priority 3 - Finance
      • Assist the Nutritionist and Vice President for Animal Health in preparing and administering the Nutrition Center annual budget. -
      • Monitor the Nutrition Center departmental budget and report activity to Nutritionist and Vice President for Animal Health. Priority 4 - Collaboration
        • Support the Nutritionist and Vice President for Animal Health in the development, communication, and implementation of Nutrition Department strategic initiatives.
        • Coordinate with suppliers to ensure secure food supply with adequate quantities, quality, and delivery timeliness.
        • Collaborate with the Browse Specialist to support browse procurement and distribution.
        • Support inter-departmental relationships and communication among Nutrition, Animal Care, Veterinary Medicine, and other internal departments. Other Responsibilities and Duties
          • Other assistance, as designated by the Nutritionist, to support the overall goals of the department and organization. Denver Zoo retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
          • Annual departmental budget. Acts as a good steward of Denver Zoo's resources.
          • The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of Denver Zoo.
          • This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations. Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications
            • Completion or in pursuit of a 4-year degree in Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Business, Hospitality, Restaurant Management, Food Services, or Nutrition required, or in a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
            • Requires minimum of 2-years of experience in a zoo commissary, restaurant, or similar operation to include knowledge of budget, commodity computer-based procurement, inventory practices, personnel management and development, and physical and food safety; customer service and supervisory experience; experience working in a nonprofit and with HACCP is strongly preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and/or special skills.
            • Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite are necessary. -
            • Requires excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks.
            • Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
            • Good negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with diplomacy are preferred.
            • Must be an outstanding communicator and considered to be a developer of people who is comfortable motivating, collaborating, and working with a broad cross section of people in direct and matrixed relationships.
            • Experience applying an equitable analysis to all duties to achieve organizational goals and demonstrate the Denver Zoo's commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and anti-racism preferred. Position Conditions
              • Ability to pass a physical examination, background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
              • Possession of a valid Colorado Class "R" Driver's License within 3 months of hire with a clean driving record.
              • Schedule Availability: Days, Nights and Weekends Compensation Range for this position is $5,206 - $6,508 (monthly).This is a full-time position with excellent benefits including medical, dental and vision benefits; life insurance; short term and long-term disability; 403(b) retirement plan; and vacation and sick leave. - Application Process and Timelines Resumes / Completed applications must be submitted by October 15th, 2022.
