Assistant/Associate Dean-Fort Collins Branch The University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. Nature of Work In collaboration with CU School of Medicine leadership and under the direction of the Interim Associate Dean for Medical Education, the 0.8 - 1.0 FTE Assistant Dean for Education, University of Colorado at Colorado State University (CU - CSU) is responsible for planning, management and leadership of the curriculum for the School of Medicine CSU Branch students. The Assistant/Associate Dean for Education, CU - CSU will have responsibilities including oversight of CU - CSU curricular and educational programs, and leadership for ongoing curriculum redesign. Please Note: The primary location of the position will be at the CSU Campus in Fort Collins, CO. This position will report through the CU School of Medicine (located in Aurora, CO), but the office and branch is located in Fort Collins. The scope and focus of the contributions of the Assistant/Associate Dean for Education, CU - CSU to the SOM's educational mission will be in the following key areas: Academic Administration and Leadership As a leader of the School of Medicine's CU - CSU curriculum, the Assistant/Associate Dean for Education, CU - CSU represents the branch with: UME leadership; School of Medicine offices, departments and committees; all University of Colorado health profession schools and programs, including those at Anschutz Medical Campus, CU - CSU branch and Fort Collins area clinical partners; community-based faculty serving the educational programs for the SOM; other medical schools, locally and nationally; accrediting and oversight bodies (LCME, AAMC, NBME) and professional societies and organizations sharing our interests in medical education. Curriculum Development, Design and Implementation: Responsible for design, development, and implementation, including curriculum change and innovation; curriculum management/assessment, including data driven quality assurance; and reporting and compliance with all accreditation standards. Professional Field: Assistant or Associate Professor Assistant Professors appointed to tenure track positions should have the terminal degree appropriate to their field or its equivalent, plus some teaching experience. They should be well-qualified to teach at the undergraduate or graduate levels and possess qualifications for research or scholarship in a special field or clinical discipline. Associate Professors should have the terminal degree appropriate to their field or its equivalent, considerable successful teaching experience, and promising accomplishment in scholarship or in research. Normally the award of tenure accompanies appointment to or promotion to associate professor, except at the School of Medicine where tenure may be granted at any point in the faculty member's career when he/she meets the School's standards for tenure. Supervision Received This position reports directly to the Interim Associate Dean for Medical Education. Major changes or additions to the curriculum will require presentation to and approval by the appropriate curriculum committees, including but not limited to the Essential Core Block Directors Committee, Clinical Block Directors Committee (CBD), Longitudinal Curriculum Committee (LCC), Subinternship Directors Committee, and the Curriculum Steering Committee (CSC). Supervision Exercised Supervise and participate in the hiring of the Phase I and II educators and small group leaders, and block and clinical site directors who have responsibility for the clinical experiences of the curriculum including leaders of the longitudinal integrated curriculum. Exercise line management responsibility, including human resource management according to school policies and procedures. Coordinate and communicate effectively with both CSU and CU in all relevant areas of supervision. Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, civility, professionalism and commitment to organizational values. Examples of Work Performed Academic Administration and Leadership: Provide oversight for strategic curriculum development, implementation and assessment for all phases of the CU - CSU curriculum Engage and collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Essentials Core Curriculum, Assistant Dean for the Clinical Core, Assistant Dean for Longitudinal Curriculum, and Director of Electives to provide all required and elective curricular opportunities for CU - CSU students (examples include but are not limited to Phase I/II electives, Problem Based Learning, Mentored Scholarly Activity, Integrated Clinicians Course, Foundations of Doctoring, Threads, and Tracks). Develop and implement didactic and clinical Interprofessional Education (IPE) activities for CU - CSU students engaging appropriate CSU interprofessional students (such as OT, SW, clinical psychology, veterinary medicine, nutrition, human development, exercise science, etc.) and other potential community partners. In collaboration with the Office of Community Based Medical Education (OCBME), recruit clinical faculty for the students and assure all active teaching faculty for CU - CSU students have an active faculty appointment at the CUSOM. In collaboration with the Academy of Medical Educators (AME), OCBME, CSU Teaching and Learning committee, and other community stakeholders, create, implement, assess and sustain faculty development curricula for clinical faculty working with CU - CSU students. Assure SOM compliance with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards regarding the MD educational program, especially in the area of experience equivalency for CU - CSU students. Represent CU - CSU at meetings of the Essential Core Block Directors Committee, Clinical Block Directors Committee (CBD), Curriculum Steering Committee (CSC), Longitudinal Curriculum Committee (LCC), its subcommittees and other education-related groups, as deemed appropriate by the Interim Associate Dean for Medical Education. Chair the CU - CSU Curriculum Subcommittee and report progress and findings to the appropriate committees at the SOM. Engage and collaborate with other CSU committees as they relate to the medical students' curriculum. Engage in innovation and participate in scholarship as it pertains to the CU - CSU program. Promote scholarship by CU - CSU curriculum directors and other key educators. Collaborate with the Office of Student Life to oversee a centralized system to review any proposed extramural elective taken by a medical student under the auspices of another medical education program, institution, or organization and to ensure the return of a performance assessment of the student and an evaluation of the elective by the student. Collaborate with the Offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, Evaluation, and Lifelong Learning to advance the educational mission. Serve as a steward for the CU - CSU curricular content and student career development. Meet the mentoring needs of CU - CSU students. Curriculum Design and Implementation : Work with the Senior Associate Dean for Education, Interim Associate Dean for Education, other curriculum Assistant Deans/Directors, curriculum committee chairs, and faculty and administrative leaders to implement change to medical school curriculum, including the overall structure of the curriculum and the design and implementation of new programs. Oversee CU - CSU curriculum development and delivery, including: providing leadership in educational development and assessment of educational objectives; working with the school's Curriculum Steering Committee and its subcommittees to effectively integrate and coordinate curricula to ensure up-to-date and relevant competency-based curricula, with the ultimate goal of equipping students for future practice. Ensure student engagement and partnership in ongoing curriculum design, development, review and feedback. In collaboration with curriculum committees and advisory groups, advance the use of information technology in support of curriculum, student and course evaluation and innovation. Work with Evaluation Office to ensure successful administrative management for CSB course evaluation. Develop and implement measurement tools to track and monitor the effectiveness of curriculum changes to ensure continued success in attracting superior applicants and training outstanding physicians. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must be knowledgeable about medical education and have a track record of participation in medical education. Must be knowledgeable about the School of Medicine including undergraduate medical education curriculum. Must be knowledgeable and able to work closely and collaboratively with educational leaders at CSU and at CU SOM Must have superior interpersonal and team development skills, including interpersonal and communication skills that support consensus building and shared decision making. Facility in building collaborative and productive working relationships within the medical education milieu, including all clinical and basic science departments, and other key constituents and colleagues, to fulfill the academic mission of the institution.
